Michigan No-Fault

How auto insurance covers medical equipment

Under Michigan’s no-fault system, Personal Injury Protection (PIP) pays allowable expenses for an injured person’s care, recovery and rehabilitation — including reasonably necessary medical equipment — regardless of who caused the accident, up to the PIP coverage level on the policy.

PIP benefits usually come first from your own auto policy or a policy in your household. Once your physician prescribes equipment, we confirm which insurer is responsible, verify the available PIP coverage, obtain any required approval and schedule delivery. We then submit the claim to the auto insurer.

Since July 2020, Michigan drivers can choose different PIP medical coverage levels. We check the policy’s coverage before delivery, so you know where you stand.

FAQ

Auto accident equipment questions

Does Michigan no-fault insurance cover medical equipment?

Michigan’s no-fault law provides Personal Injury Protection (PIP) benefits that can pay for reasonably necessary products and services for an injured person’s care, recovery and rehabilitation — including prescribed medical equipment — up to the PIP coverage level on the policy. We verify PIP coverage with the auto insurer before delivery and submit the claim to them.

Which auto insurer is responsible if I was a passenger or pedestrian?

In Michigan, PIP benefits usually come first from your own auto policy or a policy of a relative in your household, even if someone else caused the accident. If you are not sure which insurer applies, give us the details and we will confirm it with the claims adjuster.

Do I have to pay for my equipment?

For approved workers’ compensation and auto accident claims, we submit the claim directly to the insurance carrier or claims administrator, so patients typically pay nothing out of pocket. Coverage is decided by your carrier and the status of your claim. If anything is not covered, we tell you before delivery.

Who submits the claim to the insurance company?

We do. After delivery, we submit the claim to the workers’ comp carrier, TPA or auto insurer with the authorization, HCPCS codes, physician order and proof of delivery, and we follow up until the claim is processed. Patients do not need to file anything for the equipment.

What if my claim is pending or the equipment is not approved?

We stay in contact with the adjuster while a claim is pending and let you know as soon as a decision is made. If the equipment is not authorized, we explain your options before anything is delivered.

Hurt in a car accident and need medical equipment?

Send us the prescription and claim details. We verify coverage and obtain authorization, deliver the equipment, and submit the claim to the insurance carrier for you.
